01 / THE SPIRIT OF THE PLACE

Some places ask you to slow down.

Kuterevo is one of them.

On the slopes of Velebit, above the Gacka Valley, village life follows a quieter rhythm. Wood, gardens and mountain air shape the everyday. The bear refuge brings many people here. The village gives you a reason to stay curious.

02 / A DIFFERENT KIND OF ENCOUNTER

A place of refuge.

Kuterevo's refuge was created for orphaned bears that could not survive on their own in the wild. Its story is also about people: volunteers, a mountain community and the patient work of caring for another species.

Come to observe, listen and learn. Let the bears set the pace.

05 / BEFORE YOU GO

A thoughtful visit starts here.

Give yourself time, arrive with curiosity and check the refuge's own guidance before travelling.

When to come

Plan for spring, summer or autumn. The refuge asks visitors to avoid disturbing the bears in winter. In warm weather, mornings or later afternoons are usually the better choice.

Make time

Our suggestion: allow a relaxed half-day for the village and refuge, then add another stop only if your day allows. Bear activity and conversations with volunteers cannot be scheduled.

Getting here

Kuterevo is reached by local roads from the Otočac and Krasno area. Check your route and mountain weather before setting out. Follow local parking signs and keep village access clear.

Visit with care

Follow the refuge team's instructions. Keep noise low, stay behind barriers and do not feed or attempt to touch bears. Wear comfortable shoes for outdoor, potentially uneven ground.

Good to know

Is this the official bear refuge website?

No. Kuterevo.com is an independent editorial guide by Adriatic Ritual. The refuge operates its own website at medvjedi-kuterevo.org. For visits, volunteering or support, contact the refuge directly.

When can I visit the refuge?

The refuge's visitor page describes visits in spring, summer and autumn, with published hours of 09:00–17:00. Confirm the current arrangements directly before travelling. Winter visits are exceptional because the bears should not be disturbed.

Do I need to book or buy a ticket?

Check directly with the refuge for current entry and contribution arrangements. Groups should contact the team ahead of time. This guide does not sell tickets or accept donations on behalf of the refuge.

Is a visit suitable for children or people with limited mobility?

Plan around your group's needs. Children should remain supervised near the enclosures. The setting is outdoors, and surfaces may be uneven; ask the refuge about current access, gradients and facilities before travelling if step-free access is essential.

Will I definitely see bears?

No sighting or level of activity is guaranteed. Bears may rest out of view, especially in warm weather. A rewarding visit also includes learning about their care and the refuge's work.

What else should I explore nearby?

Krasno and the House of Velebit are natural companions to a Kuterevo visit. The Gacka Valley offers a different landscape, while Senj and Zavratnica bring you towards the coast. Use the map to choose a realistic route; these are separate stops, not a continuous walking trail.
