VILLAGE LIFE · A short field note

The village beyond the bears.

Wood, music and everyday life on the edge of Velebit.

It is easy to make a place into a single attraction. Kuterevo deserves a slower reading. Before and after your refuge visit, notice the gardens, the houses and the way the village sits within its mountain landscape.

Woodworking is part of Kuterevo's cultural identity. Traditional wooden objects and the local stringed instrument known as the kuterevka or dangubica connect craft with the materials and rhythms of village life. The story is one of knowledge carried by people, not simply objects in a display.

Do not assume that workshops, homes or performances are open to visitors. Ask locally what is available, request permission before photographing people and respect private spaces. When an opportunity to buy locally made work arises, ask about its maker and origin.

A short walk through the village, a conversation when welcomed and a little attention can change the character of a visit. The refuge is one chapter. Kuterevo is the whole setting.

Look beyond the attraction. A village is a place where people live.
